Hey, I'm pretty sure you've repeatedly posted a list of native artists that sell their jewelry/beadwork/leatherwork if people are genuinely interested in purchasing items that reflect their respect and admiration of the cultures of those artists... But now I can't find the list! Sorry if this is super annoying to ask, but could you re-post it (and maybe tag it so I can find it again)? I tried searching the site for "vendor" or "etsy" but it just didn't give me any results. Thank you!
About a year ago some one gave me a "Navajo" styled shirt from Urban Outfitters, I naively and stupidly wore it because I thought it made me look cool. A couple months ago I saw this blog and realized how offensive the shirt was. I was so embarrassed, I wanted to try to defend myself about it in my head but I realized how racist and ignorant I was being. The shirt is now in the garbage and I feel more educated on the topic of cultural appropriation. So I just want to say thanks.
“im not racist” says the white teenager as she puts on face paint, a 10 dollar feather head dress she bought at a halloween store and models for pictures, turning up the volume on her kreayshawn playlist
you are not in their shoes and have not experienced their oppression. their feelings stem from a lifelong of their own unique oppression. you cannot invalidate their feelings by saying that they are “overreacting” they have every right to feel the way they do and especially if you are white, able, cisgender, male, you certainly cannot step in and tell them how to feel.
Hi~ I originally thought you might be oversensitive, but after reading all those articles, I truly understand why you are so offended. Looking at those images now actually makes me upset as well. I just thought I'd let you know: Good Job for standing strong on defending this. Let headdresses only be worn by those who worked for it. Thank you for educating me. ♥
like just now, I saw a post from a girl who deleted posts of herself wearing an Indian headdress because people thought it was racist and were offended. omg, give me a break. I’ve done, shall we say, “indigenous-styled” photo shoots for fun and for work before. people use…
Intent is not magical. Things are not offensive only if they were intended to be so.
Where-I-Felt-Most-Alive and I would like to say thanks for reblogging my picture my picture with that nice caption. Let me display how I feel about it through Disney’s inaccurate portrayal of Pocahontas.
So you don’t give a fuck about racism? Good to know where you stand. -k
I wasn’t trying to be offensive at all. My roommate is half indian and she looks like Pocahontas to me so we did a “tribal” shoot for my class. All we did was put make up on her that resembled tribal make up, but way different. So maybe you should stop looking all over tumblr for this stuff and calm down.. I can assure you people have better things to do with their time than to put on a headdress just to piss you off
Because the only way to do something offensive is to intend for it to be offensive? No. -k
Confused? A couple months ago you posted a picture of me in my “costume” saying “THIS SHIT IS OFFENSIVE”. And you’re right. It really was. I would’ve never thought of how someone could find it offensive, until I looked through your blog. I’m even more embarrassed that I tried to defend my racism, saying it was in good fun. The reason people argue with you is because they know you’re right. I’m not saying it was the nicest wake up call I got, but hey, you saved me from looking like a racial idiot. So thanks.
It takes a lot of guts to say this. I think I can speak on behalf of all of the contributors/readers of this blog when I say that this message is very, very much appreciated. <3
“There’s also: “I LOVE INDIANS SO MUCH. I LOVE YOUR SOULS AND YOUR CLOTHES AND YOUR TRADITIONS AND YOUR MUSIC AND YOUR FOOD AND YOUR SOULS,” say the white people like they understand shit about Native American cultures, whilst wearing fake Native American jewellery and rip-off regalia and addressing us like we’re some doe-eyed litter of abandoned puppies instead of a race of HUMAN BEINGS that had almost been wiped completely off the face of this planet by a Nation of pale-skinned, self-righteous, two-faced, religion-humping sadists who thought they knew everything about things they would never even come close to understanding because they were too concerned with taking over the fucking world at absolutely any God-forsaken cost.”—justanotherphoenix, here (via thefullmetalbitch)
