Back around Halloween when that college (I believe Ohio) made the "My Culture is Not a Costume" campaign, do you think they deserved the flack they got or should it have been regarded as a serious issue?
I loved the shit outta that campaign! There are so many beautiful, creative, and/or funny costumes out there, why the hell do you have to dress up as a racial stereotype? There’s no excuse.
some tramp just said my dreamcatcher tattoo is offensive towards native americans. BITCH IF ANYTHING ITS A FUCKING COMPLIMENT. my dreamcatcher has special meaning to me. i dont know whether to envy or pity you…that yr life has obviously been so free of any real suffering that you…
Oh, here it is! How exactly did you expect me to see this on your personal blog? Next time, send me a message if you want to argue, instead of getting mad that I didn’t see something you posted.
To be fair, your tattoo is certainly not the worst example of appropriation we’ve seen, but it’s still not something natives are comfortable with. What cultural or spiritual connection do you have to dream catchers? Oh that’s right, none. But they’re like, super pretty and trendy right now so you got one tattooed on you forever even though you’re not native, not American, and most likely have never experienced any actual aspects of any native cultures.
Protip: “IT’S A COMPLIMENT” is old as fuck, and we’ve all heard it before.
Protip: anti-native racism is very, very real.
Protip: cultural appropriation is real, it’s a problem, and you are a part of it.
Protip: it’s pretty dickish to tell natives that they are “free of any real suffering” because they take the time to call out appropriation.
MY CULTURE IS NOT A TREND. Plz tell me how your attempt to have my blog deleted (on what grounds, exactly?) goes, okay? ;*
I’ve wanted to make something like this for a while now. Think of it as the angry lovechild of This is Not Grunge and My Culture is Not a Trend. My goal is to call out and educate as many people as possible who use the #native american tag (among others) to post shit like this:
Because while there are many awe-inspiring, beautiful aspects of native cultures, this crap is nothing short of ugly, racist, and insulting.
How you can help!
Send me links for the resources page! Articles, blogs, tumblrs, videos, anything relating to anti-native racism, cultural appropriation, etc. I’m also interested in making a list of awesome native/anti-racist tumblrs, so gimme a shout if you’ve got one!
Submit an offensive post! Anti-appropriation articles and graphics (like this awesome picture) are welcome as well.
Tell people why their posts are offensive. There’s strength in numbers, so the more people who reblog a racist/appropriating post with commentary, the more the offenders are likely to get it. Whether it’s a quick, “Yo, this is racist” or a paragraphs-long rant on why it’s not cool for a white kid to get a tattoo of a skull in a war bonnet, every little bit helps.
I’d also like it if you followed this blog, lolol.
